What Shawnee residents should know
KU MedWest at 7405 Renner Road is part of The University of Kansas Health System. It offers urgent care, imaging, surgery and lab work, but it is an outpatient site, not an ER hospital. For a hospital stay, Shawnee residents often use AdventHealth Shawnee Mission next door in Merriam or The University of Kansas Hospital's main campus in Kansas City, KS, which calls itself the region's only nationally verified Level I Trauma Center.
Those are two separate systems, and a Medicare Advantage network may include one and not the other. If your doctors are at KU MedWest and your heart doctor practices at AdventHealth, check both before you enroll. A Medicare Supplement works the other way: Plan G or Plan N covers any provider who accepts Medicare, with no referrals. Kansas has no birthday rule for Medigap, so plan to keep the Supplement you pick.
Shawnee has its own city ride program. Shawnee CityRide serves Shawnee residents 65 and older; call 913-742-6014. RideKC buses in Johnson County charge $1 for riders 65+ or with a Medicare card since fares came back on June 1, 2026. RideKC Freedom paratransit and RideJoCo Microtransit both book at 913-362-3500, and Catch-a-Ride volunteers answer at 913-715-8900.
Veterans can use the Shawnee VA Clinic at 6830 Anderson St. The Mill Creek Activity Center at 6518 Vista Ave hosts Johnson County Park & Recreation District 50 Plus programs. For free Medicare counseling, call SHICK at 1-800-860-5260.
