What Merriam residents should know

AdventHealth Shawnee Mission at 9100 W 74th St has carried several names. It opened in 1962 as Shawnee Mission Hospital, became Shawnee Mission Medical Center in 1971 and took its current name on January 2, 2019. It holds Comprehensive Cardiac Center certification, and in August 2025 it was named the first national affiliate of the University of Chicago Medicine Cancer Network.

With a large hospital in town, the first plan question is simple: is AdventHealth Shawnee Mission in the network? Networks change every January, so check it by name in next year's directory. Also check KU MedWest in Shawnee if you use it for urgent care or imaging, since it belongs to The University of Kansas Health System. A Medicare Supplement removes the network question, because Plan G or Plan N works with any provider who accepts Medicare.

The Merriam Community Center at 6040 Slater St runs 50+ programs and serves county nutrition lunches at 11:30. For trips beyond town, RideKC buses charge a $1 reduced fare for adults 65+ and Medicare card holders since June 1, 2026. Call 913-362-3500 for RideKC Freedom paratransit or RideJoCo Microtransit, and 913-715-8900 for Catch-a-Ride.

Medigap rules in Kansas differ from some states. There is no birthday rule, so a mid-life switch between Supplements usually means health questions. If you are under 65 on Medicare because of a disability, Kansas gives you a 6-month guaranteed-issue window after Part B starts. SHICK counselors explain these rules for free at 1-800-860-5260.
