Medicare in Olathe

What Olathe residents should know

Olathe's hospital on West 151st Street used to be Olathe Medical Center. Olathe Health joined The University of Kansas Health System in a move announced January 5, 2023, and the hospital now goes by University of Kansas Health System Olathe Hospital. It runs an emergency room at 20333 W 151st St. Toward Overland Park, AdventHealth South Overland Park opened on West 165th Street in 2021 with its own ER, and Saint Luke's South Hospital sits on Metcalf Avenue.

Those three hospitals belong to three different systems. A Medicare Advantage HMO may include one and leave out the others, so look up the hospital you would want in an emergency, your main doctor and each specialist by name. If you would rather not check networks every fall, a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) lets you see any doctor in the country who accepts Medicare. Plan G and Plan N cost more each month, and you add a stand-alone Part D plan for drugs. Kansas has no Medigap birthday rule, so switching Supplements later usually means answering health questions.

For rides, RideKC buses in Johnson County started charging again on June 1, 2026. Riders 65 and older, and anyone with a Medicare card, qualify for the $1 reduced fare. RideKC Freedom paratransit and RideJoCo Microtransit both book through 913-362-3500, and the county's Catch-a-Ride volunteers answer at 913-715-8900.

Olathe has no dedicated senior center, but the Olathe Community Center at 1205 E Kansas City Rd offers senior memberships (913-971-8563). The county's Aging and Human Services department works out of the County Administration Building at 111 S Cherry St in Olathe. For free, one-on-one Medicare counseling, call SHICK at 1-800-860-5260.

Common questions

Medicare questions from Olathe

Is Olathe Medical Center the same hospital as Olathe Hospital?
Yes. Olathe Health became part of The University of Kansas Health System in 2023, and the hospital on West 151st Street is now University of Kansas Health System Olathe Hospital. Search plan directories under the current name, and ask your doctors which name their offices bill under.
Does Kansas let me switch Medigap plans on my birthday?
No. Kansas has no Medigap birthday rule. Outside your Medigap Open Enrollment Period or another guaranteed-issue right, a new insurer can ask health questions. That makes your first Supplement choice worth getting right.
When can I change my Olathe Medicare plan?
Anyone with Medicare can switch plans during Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7. If you already have Medicare Advantage, you get one more change during Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment, January 1 to March 31.
