Medicare in Mission

What Mission residents should know

The "Shawnee Mission" name on so many local addresses comes from the Shawnee Methodist Mission, the historic site behind the postal name. The hospital that carries the name, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission, is in neighboring Merriam at 9100 W 74th St. The University of Kansas Hospital's main campus at 4000 Cambridge St in Kansas City, KS, runs 24/7 emergency services and houses The University of Kansas Cancer Center, which is NCI-designated Comprehensive.

AdventHealth and The University of Kansas Health System are separate systems. If you want both open to you, check each one in any Medicare Advantage plan before you enroll. Many Mission residents also see doctors across State Line Road in Missouri, and Advantage networks do not always cross it. A Medicare Supplement lets you use any provider who accepts Medicare in either state. You pay a monthly premium for that and buy Part D separately.

Mission runs a "50 & Beyond" program at the Powell Community Center, 6200 Martway St (913-722-8200). For rides, RideKC buses charge a $1 reduced fare to riders 65+ and Medicare card holders since fares returned on June 1, 2026. RideKC Freedom and RideJoCo Microtransit book at 913-362-3500, and Catch-a-Ride volunteers answer at 913-715-8900.

Homebound and 60 or older? The Johnson County Area Agency on Aging delivers meals after an assessment; request them at 913-715-8861. For free Medicare counseling, call SHICK at 1-800-860-5260.
